The best SEO audit tools for finding technical problems, compared on crawl depth, page limits, fix lists, and price. Free crawlers, hosted audits, and who each fits.

Key takeaways

  • The best SEO audit tools are crawlers that visit every page and list problems by impact. Instant "SEO score" checkers only look at one page.
  • Screaming Frog is the deepest crawler and free up to 500 URLs. Zutrix, SE Ranking, and Semrush run hosted audits on a schedule with plain-language fixes.
  • Ahrefs Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console give you a free audit and index report for sites you own.
  • Judge a tool by its fix list, not its score. A score of 72 means nothing. "43 pages block indexing" means something.

An SEO audit tool crawls your site like Googlebot, checks each page against a list of rules, and tells you what to fix. The best SEO audit tools differ in how deep they crawl, how many pages they allow, how clearly they explain a fix, and whether they recheck on a schedule. This guide compares nine of them with prices checked on September 16, 2026.

We build Zutrix, and its Site Audit is on the list. We are a vendor. We compare it with the same criteria as every other tool and say when Screaming Frog is the better choice, which for deep technical work it often is. For what an audit should check, see our technical SEO checklist.

What a good SEO audit tool does

  • Crawls every page you allow, not just the homepage.
  • Checks indexability: robots directives, canonicals, redirects, status codes.
  • Checks on-page basics: titles, descriptions, headings, thin pages, duplicates.
  • Checks structure: broken links, orphan pages, redirect chains, crawl depth.
  • Checks speed and Core Web Vitals.
  • Groups issues by impact and explains the fix in plain words.
  • Rechecks on a schedule and shows what changed.

There are two kinds of site audit tool, and a third thing that is often confused with them. Desktop crawlers like Screaming Frog run on your computer and go as deep as your memory allows. A hosted technical SEO audit tool runs on the vendor's servers. And a website SEO checker grades one URL, which is not an audit at all. SEO audit software worth paying for is one of the first two. Hosted audits like Zutrix, Semrush, and SE Ranking run on a schedule, cap the page count by plan, and present the results for a non-technical reader. Most teams use one of each.

The best SEO audit tools, reviewed

1. Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Screaming Frog

The crawler every technical SEO runs

Price
Free up to 500 URLs, about $259 a year (£199) for unlimited
Runs on
Your computer, Windows, Mac, Linux
Finds
Everything: status codes, redirects, canonicals, titles, headings, links, images, schema, JavaScript rendering
Lacks
Scheduling on the free version, hosted reports, plain-language fixes

Screaming Frog is the deepest SEO crawler you can buy and the free version covers most small sites. It shows you the raw truth of every URL and exports it to a spreadsheet. It does not explain what to do, and turning its output into a client report takes work. For a technical SEO it is essential. For a business owner it is a lot. Our guide on orphan pages shows one thing only a crawler finds.

Screaming Frog: pros and cons

Pros

  • Most thorough crawl available
  • Free for 500 URLs
  • One yearly fee, no subscription

Cons

  • Desktop only
  • Spreadsheet output
  • No fix explanations

2. Zutrix Site Audit

Zutrix Site Audit

Hosted audit with plain fixes, bundled with rank tracking

Price
Included from $19 a month
Pages
100 on Starter, 200 on Pro, 500 on Agency, 750 on Enterprise
Checks
200 plus, grouped by impact, with Core Web Vitals
Also included
Daily rank tracking, backlink monitoring, keyword research, AI visibility

The Zutrix Site Audit runs 200 plus checks on a schedule and sorts the results by how much they hurt. Each fix is written for someone who does not do SEO every day. It lives in the same project as your rankings, so you can see whether a fix moved anything. The page caps suit small and mid-size sites. A 5,000 page site needs the Enterprise plan or a desktop crawler beside it.

Where Screaming Frog wins: depth, JavaScript rendering options, and unlimited pages. Where Zutrix wins: the fix list reads like instructions, the recheck is automatic, and the price includes the rest of the toolset. Our SEO audit report template shows how to turn either into a report.

Zutrix Site Audit: pros and cons

Pros

  • Plain fix list by impact
  • Scheduled rechecks
  • Rank tracking in the same project
  • From $19

Cons

  • Page caps per plan
  • Less raw detail than a desktop crawler
  • No JavaScript rendering settings

3. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools

Free for any site you verify. It runs a scheduled Site Audit with health scores and issue lists, and shows your backlinks from the Ahrefs index. It is the best free SEO audit tool for your own site. No competitor crawls and no rank tracking. Verify your sites in it before you buy anything. See Ahrefs pricing for the paid tiers.

4. Semrush Site Audit

Semrush crawls up to 100,000 pages a month on the $139 plan, groups issues into thematic reports, and grades severity. It is the strongest hosted audit for large sites and the most expensive way to get one. Worth it if you use the rest of Semrush. See Semrush pricing.

5. SE Ranking Website Audit

SE Ranking's audit is readable, scheduled, and generous on pages. It comes with the $129 Core plan alongside 2,000 tracked keywords. For an agency already on SE Ranking it is the default. See SE Ranking pricing.

6. Sitebulb

Sitebulb is a desktop crawler like Screaming Frog with far better presentation. Every issue comes with a plain explanation, a priority, and a visual. Plans start around $15 a month. It is the crawler to pick if you audit for clients and want the report to look good without a spreadsheet session.

7. Google Search Console

Search Console is not a crawler but it is Google's own audit of your site. It shows which pages are indexed, which are excluded and why, Core Web Vitals from real users, mobile usability, and structured data errors. Free. Check the Pages report monthly and act on anything under "Why pages are not indexed".

8. Lighthouse

Built into Chrome, Lighthouse audits one page for performance, accessibility, and basic SEO. It is the free tool behind PageSpeed Insights. Use it for a single important page, not for a site. Our SEO Chrome extensions guide lists similar one-page tools.

9. Seobility

Seobility runs a hosted audit with a free plan of 100 pages from September 2026, and Premium at $69.90 a month. The audit is clear and the free tier suits a very small site. See Seobility alternatives for how it compares after the 2026 price change.

How to run an audit with any of these tools

  1. 1

    Crawl the whole site

Start from the homepage and let the tool follow every internal link. Include the sitemap so orphan pages get found too.

  2. 2

    Fix indexing first

Pages blocked by robots.txt, noindex tags, wrong canonicals, and 4xx or 5xx errors. Nothing else matters on a page Google cannot index.

  3. 3

    Then structure

Broken links, redirect chains, pages more than three clicks deep, and pages with no internal links.

  4. 4

    Then on-page

Missing or duplicate titles and descriptions, thin pages, missing H1s, images without alt text.

  5. 5

    Then speed

Core Web Vitals on the templates that matter most, usually the homepage, category pages, and product or service pages.

  6. 6

    Recheck in a week

Run the audit again after the fixes ship and confirm the issue count fell. Hosted tools do this on their own.
