Key takeaways

  • The best SEO Chrome extensions do one thing in one click: show meta tags, headings, links, speed, or keyword volume while you look at a page.
  • Install four to start: Detailed SEO Extension for on-page, Keywords Everywhere or Keyword Surfer for volume, MozBar or Ahrefs SEO Toolbar for authority, and Lighthouse for speed.
  • Extensions check one page at a time. For a whole site, use a crawler. For rankings over time, use a tracker.
  • Too many extensions slow Chrome and clutter every page. Pin the four you use and disable the rest.

SEO Chrome extensions are the tools you reach for fifty times a day. What is this page's title tag? How many H2s does it have? Does this link pass value? What does this keyword get in searches? This guide lists twelve of the best SEO extensions for Chrome, all free or with a useful free tier, grouped by the question each answers. Everything was checked on September 16, 2026.

We build Zutrix, which has no Chrome extension. So this list has no vendor entry, and where an extension stops, we say which kind of tool takes over. If you want a longer list of free tools beyond the browser, see our cheap SEO tools guide.

What SEO Chrome extensions are good for, and what they are not

Chrome extensions for SEO, or SEO plugins for Chrome as some stores list them, are the smallest free SEO tools you can own. An SEO browser extension reads the page you are on and shows you something about it. That makes it perfect for quick checks: your own page after an edit, a competitor's page you want to copy, a prospect's site during a sales call. It makes it useless for anything across many pages or across time. That is crawler and tracker territory.

How we picked these extensions

We installed the 30 most downloaded SEO extensions in the Chrome Web Store. We kept the ones that answer a real question in one click, were updated in the last year, and ask only for the permissions they need. Extensions that duplicate a better one were dropped in favour of the better one. Prices and free tiers were checked on September 16, 2026.

The best SEO Chrome extensions, reviewed

1. Detailed SEO Extension

One click shows the title, meta description, canonical, robots directives, headings in order, word count, links, images without alt text, and schema on any page. It is the cleanest on-page SEO checker in a browser and it is free. Install it first. Our technical SEO checklist lists what to look for in each tab.

2. SEO Minion

SEO Minion overlaps with Detailed and adds a few things: a broken link checker for the current page, a SERP preview, hreflang checks, and a highlight of nofollow links. Free. Keep one of the two on-page extensions enabled, not both.

3. Keywords Everywhere

Shows search volume, CPC, and competition next to Google results, autocomplete, and People Also Ask. Plans start at $84 a year for 100,000 credits, one per keyword. It turns every Google search into keyword research. For lists with difficulty, the Zutrix free keyword planner and paid tool take over.

4. Keyword Surfer

Surfer's free extension shows volume for the search term and related terms in the Google sidebar, plus word counts for each result. Less precise than Keywords Everywhere and free. A fair choice if you only want a rough number.

5. MozBar

MozBar shows Domain Authority and Page Authority for every result in a SERP and for the page you are on. It is free with a Moz account and it is the number most clients know. Our Moz alternatives guide explains what DA does and does not mean.

6. Ahrefs SEO Toolbar

Free with an Ahrefs account, it shows Domain Rating, URL Rating, and backlink counts in the SERP and an on-page report for the current page. With a paid plan it shows keyword data too. It is the best single toolbar for link-minded SEOs.

7. Lighthouse

Lighthouse is built into Chrome DevTools and audits performance, accessibility, best practices, and basic SEO for any page. Run it on mobile mode for a realistic score. It is the free source behind PageSpeed Insights.

8. Web Vitals

Google's own extension shows Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift live as you browse. Useful for spotting which element causes a layout shift. Free.

9. Redirect Path

Redirect Path shows every hop in a redirect chain and the status code of each. Two clicks tells you whether a URL is a 301, a 302, a chain of three, or a 404. Free. Pair it with our guide on how to fix broken links.

10. Link Redirect Trace

Similar to Redirect Path with more detail: robots directives, canonical, rel attributes on links, and a full header dump. Choose one of the two redirect tools.

11. Schema Builder and Validator

Shows the structured data on any page and validates it against schema.org. Useful for checking that your FAQ, product, or article markup is present and complete before you wait for Google to tell you. Free.

12. Similarweb extension

Shows an estimated monthly traffic figure and traffic sources for any site you visit. It is an estimate, and rough for small sites, but it is a quick way to size a competitor. Our Similarweb alternatives guide explains the limits.
