Key takeaways
- The best free rank tracker for your own site is Google Search Console. It shows average position, clicks, and impressions for every query, from Google itself.
- For an exact position in a specific city, a free SERP checker runs a live search from that location. Zutrix, Ahrefs, and Semrush all offer one.
- Free tools cannot track hundreds of keywords daily with history. That is the job paid trackers do, from $19 a month with weekly checks or $29 with daily.
- Incognito mode is not a rank tracker. Google still personalises by location and device, so your result is one sample, not the truth.
A free rank tracker sounds like a contradiction, because tracking means checking the same keywords every day and storing the results, and that costs servers. What you can get for free is a lot of one-off checks and one very good source of averages. This guide lists seven free ways to check Google rankings, what each one shows, and the point at which paying $19 a month saves you time.
We build Zutrix, a paid rank tracker with a free SERP checker. The free tool is genuinely free, no account, no card. We list it here alongside the others and explain when the paid version earns its price. If you want the full paid field, see our best rank tracker tools roundup.
What a free rank tracker can and cannot do
Free tools split into two kinds. Averages from Google, which cover every keyword your site appears for but blur location and device. And live checks, which give you one exact position for one keyword in one place, right now. Neither gives you daily history for 200 keywords. That is the gap paid trackers fill. So when someone asks how to check Google rankings free, the honest answer has three parts. Google Search Console rankings for the averages. A website ranking checker for the live look. A spreadsheet for the history.
| Question | Search Console | Free SERP checker | Paid tracker |

| Where do I rank in Chicago on mobile, right now? | No | Yes | Yes |
| How did 200 keywords move this week? | Roughly | No | Yes |
| Where does my competitor rank? | No | Yes, one at a time | Yes |
| Which SERP features show up? | Some | Yes | Yes |
| Can I prove it to a client? | Screenshot the report | Screenshot the result | Automatic screenshots |
The best free rank trackers, reviewed
1. Google Search Console
Google Search Console
Google's own data for sites you verify
- Cost
- Free
- Shows
- Average position, clicks, impressions, CTR per query and page
- History
- 16 months
- Limits
- Averages across locations and devices, no competitors, no exact position
Search Console is the first place to look and the only source that is not an estimate. Open the Performance report, filter by query, and you see the average position your pages held over any date range. Filter by country or device to narrow it. The catch is the word average. A keyword at position 3 in Boston and 12 in Dallas shows as about 7. For trends it is excellent. For "where exactly am I today", it is not built for that.
2. Zutrix free SERP checker
Zutrix free SERP checker
Live Google results for any keyword, any city
- Cost
- Free, no account
- Shows
- Top results for one keyword in the country or city you pick, with search volume
- Devices
- Desktop and mobile
- Limits
- One keyword per check, no history
The free SERP checker runs a real Google search from the location you choose and shows you the results as a searcher there would see them. Type a keyword, pick a city, pick a device, and read the list. It is the quickest way to answer a client who says "I searched and could not find us". It does not store results. Run it daily and you are doing a paid tracker's job by hand.
3. Ahrefs free keyword rank checker
Ahrefs offers a free rank checker on its site that shows the top results for a keyword in a chosen country, along with the ranking page's traffic estimate and backlinks. One keyword at a time, country level rather than city. Handy for a quick competitor look. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, also free, shows the keywords your own site ranks for.
4. Semrush free account
A free Semrush account gives you 10 requests a day and one project with 10 tracked keywords updated daily. That is a real, if tiny, free rank tracker with history. If you only care about ten keywords, it works. The tenth keyword is where most people upgrade or move.
5. Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools is free and shows your Bing rankings, clicks, and impressions the way Search Console does for Google. It also has a keyword research tool with Bing volumes. Bing is a small share of search, but for some B2B and older audiences it matters.
6. Incognito search with a location trick
Open an incognito window, add "&gl=us&hl=en" to the Google URL for country and language, and search. This removes your history but not Google's location guess, so you see results for where Google thinks you are. It is free, it is manual, and it is one sample. Useful for a sanity check, not for tracking. Our guide on how to check keyword ranking in Google covers the exact steps.
7. Free tiers of paid trackers
There is no free rank tracking tool that does the full job, but several paid trackers offer a small free tier or a long trial. SE Ranking gives 14 days free. Nightwatch gives 14 days. Zutrix gives 7 days of the Agency plan for $7, with a money-back guarantee. A trial is the only free way to see daily history for many keywords, so use it on your real site.

How to check your rankings for free, step by step
- 1
Verify your site in Search Console
Add the property, verify with DNS or an HTML file, and wait a day for data.
- 2
Open the Performance report
Set the date range to the last 28 days and click the Queries tab.
- 3
Find your target keywords
Use the filter box to search for each keyword. Note the average position and impressions.
- 4
Check exact positions with a free SERP checker
For the five keywords that matter most, run a live check in your main city on mobile and desktop.
- 5
Record the results
Put the date, keyword, city, device, and position in a spreadsheet. This is your free tracker.
- 6
Repeat weekly
When this takes more than 20 minutes a week, a paid tracker costs less than your time.
When a paid rank tracker is worth it
The free method above breaks at about 20 keywords or 2 locations. Past that, the spreadsheet takes longer than the work it informs. A paid tracker checks every keyword in every city every day, stores the history, and tells you when something moves. From $19 a month, that is cheaper than an hour of anyone's time.
- +Start with Search Console. It is free and it is the truth for averages.
- +Use a free SERP checker for exact local positions before a client call.
- +Track a spreadsheet for a month. If you keep it up, you need a tool.
- xTrust an incognito search as your ranking. It is one location and one moment.
- xCompare a Search Console average with a live position and call it a drop.
- xTrack 200 keywords by hand. Your time costs more than $19.
