Key takeaways

  • Searching Google yourself is the worst way to check keyword ranking. Google personalises by location, device, and history, so you see a result nobody else sees.
  • Google Search Console shows your average position for every query, free and from Google itself. Start there.
  • A free SERP checker shows the exact position in a chosen city and device, right now. Use it to confirm a specific ranking.
  • Google Analytics does not show keyword rankings. It shows traffic. Connect it to Search Console to see queries next to sessions.
  • To monitor search engine rankings for more than 20 keywords, use a rank tracker. It costs less than the time a spreadsheet takes.

The question "how to check keyword ranking in Google" usually comes from someone who searched for their own site and did not see it. The problem is the method, not the site. Google shows you a personalised page based on where you are, what you searched before, and which device you hold. This guide gives you five ways to check keyword positions properly, in order from free to automatic.

We build Zutrix, a rank tracker. It is the fifth method below. The first four are free and we recommend them to everyone. If you want to jump to a live check right now, the free SERP checker shows the results for any keyword in any city with no account.

Why searching for yourself does not check your ranking

Google adjusts results for every searcher. Your location moves local businesses up. Your history moves sites you have visited up. Your device changes which results appear. Being logged into Google adds more. So the page you see for "best accountant" is not the page a stranger in the next town sees. Incognito mode removes history but keeps location and device.

Knowing how to check keyword ranking in Google means seeing what a typical searcher sees from a set place on a set device, and doing it the same way every time. The five methods below do that with increasing precision and decreasing effort.

How to check keyword ranking in Google, step by step

  1. 1

Open Google Search Console and go to Performance

Verify your site if you have not, then open the Performance report and set the date range to the last 28 days. Click the Queries tab. Every row is a search that showed your site, with clicks, impressions, and average position.

  2. 2

    Filter for your target keyword

Use the filter box to search for the keyword. The average position is your ranking averaged across every location and device over the period. Turn on the Pages tab to see which page ranks for it.

  3. 3

Narrow the average by country and device

Add a Country filter and a Device filter. A keyword at position 8 overall might be 3 on desktop in the US and 20 on mobile elsewhere. This is as close as Search Console gets to a specific ranking.

  4. 4

Confirm with a live SERP check

Open a free SERP checker, type the keyword, choose the city and device your customers use, and read the results. This is the exact position at this moment in that place. Screenshot it with the date.

  5. 5

Connect Search Console to Google Analytics

In Google Analytics 4, link Search Console under Admin. The Search Console reports in GA4 then show queries and positions next to sessions, so you can see which rankings bring visitors who convert.

  6. 6

Record positions in a sheet, or start a tracker

Write down the date, keyword, location, device, and position. Do it weekly. When the list passes 20 keywords or two locations, move it to a rank tracker that checks daily and keeps the history for you.

Checking keyword ranking in Google Search Console in more detail

Google Search Console average position is the most trustworthy free number you have, and the most misread. It is an average of every time your site appeared for that query, in any position, from any place. A query where you rank 2 in one city and 30 in another shows around 16. A query that appears once at position 1 shows as 1 even if that was a fluke.

Use it for direction, not for exact positions. Compare the last 28 days with the previous 28 days. Sort by position change. The queries that dropped most are where to look first. Our free rank tracker guide covers the report in detail, and our keyword ranking report guide shows how to present the numbers.

Can you see keyword ranking in Google Analytics?

Not directly. Google Analytics measures what happens on your site after the click, so it knows sessions, pages, and conversions, but not the position your page held in the results. People search "keyword ranking in Google Analytics" because the old Universal Analytics showed "not provided" for most keywords, and GA4 does not show them at all on its own.

The fix is the Search Console link. Once connected, GA4 shows a Queries report with clicks, impressions, and average position from Search Console, and a Google organic search traffic report with sessions and conversions by landing page. Together they answer the real question: which rankings make money. Our SEO KPIs guide picks the numbers worth watching.

A manual check without personalisation

If you want to check Google ranking with no tool at all, open an incognito window and search using a URL like google.com/search?q=your+keyword&gl=us&hl=en&pws=0. The gl sets the country, hl the language, and pws=0 turns off personalised results. Google still uses its guess at your location, so this works for national keywords and not for local ones. Scroll and count. It is free and it is a snapshot only.

When to use a rank tracker instead

The free methods stop working at scale. Twenty keywords in three cities on two devices is 120 checks. A rank tracker runs them every day, stores the results, shows the trend, and alerts you when something moves. It also tracks competitors on the same keywords and keeps a screenshot of every result page. A client who says "I could not find us" can then see exactly what a searcher in their city saw.

Common mistakes when checking rankings

Do
  • +Check from the location and device your customers use.
  • +Use Search Console for trends and a live check for exact positions.
  • +Record the date and settings with every check.
  • +Track competitors on the same keywords. A drop is only bad if they rose.
Don't
  • xSearch for yourself while logged in and call it a ranking.
  • xCompare a Search Console average with a live position and panic.
  • xCheck once and assume it holds. Rankings move daily.
  • xTrack 200 keywords by hand. Your time costs more than a tracker.
