SEO Tips for Beginners: 15 Things That Move Rankings in 2026 (and 5 That Do Not)

SEO tips for beginners, in plain words: 15 things that improve Google rankings for a new site, in the order to do them, plus 5 popular tips that waste your time.

Key takeaways

  • The SEO tips for beginners that matter most are boring: one page per topic, a title that says what the page is, fast pages, and links from real sites.
  • Set up Google Search Console and a rank tracker on day one, or you will never know what worked.
  • Write for one specific question per page. Google ranks pages that answer, not pages that mention.
  • Skip the old tricks: keyword density, exact match domains, bought links, and AI content by the hundred.
  • SEO takes months. Measure weekly, judge quarterly.

SEO tips for beginners usually come as a list of fifty things with no order. This guide has fifteen, in the order a new site should do them, with the reason each one works and how to check that it did. The last section lists five tips you will read elsewhere that no longer help, so you can skip them. Everything here is checked against what we see in live ranking data across the keywords Zutrix customers track.

We build Zutrix, a rank tracking and SEO platform. A few tips below say "check this in a tracker", and ours is the one we know. The free tools do most of it. If you want the terms explained first, our guide on what a root domain is covers the vocabulary.

How Google ranking works, in one paragraph

SEO for beginners starts with one idea, and the rest is detail. Google finds pages by following links, reads them, and stores them in an index. When someone searches, it picks pages from the index that match the meaning of the search and orders them by how useful and trusted they look. Useful means the page answers the question well. Trusted means other sites link to it and the site is sound. Every tip below improves one of those three things: being found, being useful, or being trusted. That is the whole of SEO basics. If you want to know how to improve Google ranking or how to rank higher on Google, you improve one of the three.

SEO tips for beginners: set up so you can measure

  1. 1

    1. Verify your site in Google Search Console

It is free and it shows the searches that bring people to you, your average positions, and pages Google cannot index. Nothing else tells you that. Do it before anything else.

  2. 2

    2. Pick 20 keywords and track them

Choose the searches you want to win, put them in a rank tracker set to your city, and check weekly. Without this you are guessing. Our free rank tracker guide covers the free ways, and the Rank Tracker does it daily from $19.

  3. 3

    3. Set up Google Analytics with one conversion

A form, a call, or a purchase. One event tells you whether rankings turn into customers.

On-page tips: make each page useful

  1. 1

    4. One page, one topic

Each page answers one question or sells one thing. Two topics on one page means it ranks for neither. Two pages on one topic means they compete with each other.

  2. 2

    5. Write a title that says what the page is

The title tag is the blue link in Google. Put the main phrase near the start and keep it under 60 characters. "Emergency Plumber in Denver, 24 Hour Service" beats "Home".

  3. 3

    6. Answer in the first paragraph

State the answer, then explain it. Google and readers both reward pages that get to the point. Our how to write SEO content guide shows the structure.

  4. 4

    7. Use headings people would search for

H2s that match the questions in Google's People Also Ask box tell Google the page covers them. Our People Also Ask guide explains how to find them.

  5. 5

    8. Write the meta description as an ad

It does not affect ranking. It affects clicks. Two sentences that say what you get, under 160 characters.

  6. 6

    9. Use plain words and short sentences

Google rewards pages people read and stay on. Nobody stays on a wall of jargon.

Technical tips: make the site easy to read

  1. 1

    10. Make it fast on a phone

Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Fix the top three items, usually oversized images and scripts. Slow pages rank worse and convert worse.

  2. 2

    11. Fix broken links and redirect chains

Crawl the site with Screaming Frog, free up to 500 pages, and fix every 404 and every redirect that hops more than once. Our how to fix broken links guide walks through it.

  3. 3

    12. Link your pages to each other

Every important page should have links from at least three other pages on your site, with descriptive words in the link. Pages with no links in are invisible. Our orphan pages guide explains why.

  4. 4

    13. Submit a sitemap

Most platforms make one at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. Submit it in Search Console so Google finds new pages quickly.

Off-page tips: earn trust

  1. 1

    14. Get links from real sites in your field

Suppliers, partners, local press, industry directories that people use, guest articles on real blogs. Five links from relevant sites beat five hundred from link farms. Our referring domains vs backlinks guide explains what counts.

  2. 2

    15. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

For any business with a location or a service area, the map pack is where local customers click. Fill every field, add photos, and answer reviews.

The SEO checklist for beginners

  • Search Console verified and sitemap submitted
  • 20 keywords tracked weekly in your city
  • One conversion event in Analytics
  • Every page has one topic and a clear title
  • Homepage passes PageSpeed on mobile
  • No 404s or redirect chains
  • Every important page has three internal links
  • Google Business Profile complete

Five beginner SEO tips that no longer work

  1. 1.Keyword density. Repeating a phrase a set number of times. Google reads meaning, not counts. Write naturally and use related words. Our LSI keywords guide explains what replaced it.
  2. 2.Exact match domains. Buying bestplumberdenver.com for the keyword. It stopped helping in 2012 and looks spammy to customers.
  3. 3.Buying links. Cheap links from link farms and "guest post" networks. They do nothing or get the site penalised. Our toxic backlinks guide covers the damage.
  4. 4.Publishing hundreds of AI articles. Google's helpful content guidance targets this directly. Sites that did it lost traffic in every update since 2023.
  5. 5.Submitting to search engines by hand. Google finds sites through links and sitemaps. Submission forms are a relic.
Do
  • +Measure from day one.
  • +Write one good page a week rather than five thin ones.
  • +Check the top results before choosing what kind of page to make.
  • +Ask suppliers and partners for a link. Most say yes.
Don't
  • xExpect results in two weeks.
  • xChase a keyword with big brands in every top spot. Pick a longer phrase. Our low competition keywords guide shows how.
  • xChange the site every week and wonder which change did it.

FAQ

Common questions

Set up Google Search Console and track 20 keywords before you change anything. Without measurement you cannot tell which of the other tips worked. After that, one page per topic with a clear title is the tip that moves rankings most.
